This is with rendercanvas v2.5.2 and jupyter_rfb v0.5.4. It's sporadic, I should try the latest rendercanvas. Occurs with both fastplotlib and pygfx so I don't think is a recent fastplotlib change. Should see if plain rendercanvas usage also causes this.
